A history of Kettering Mind
Kettering Mind was a branch of the County Association, which had
been running since 1964. There were 7 branches included in the
County Association:
- Kettering
- Wellingborough
- East Northants
- Nothampton
- Corby
- Towcester
- Daventry
In 1974 the Kettering Group opened it’s first group home and in
1977 the Tuesday evening drop-in was opened. In 1981 Social Services
Luncheon Club was formed and in 1983 a partnership was established
between Mind and Social Services, with community funding providing
the workers and Social Services providing the funding. Because of
the success of this project, funding was found to employ a
Co-ordinator and the running was handed over to Mind with Social
Services providing funding for a worker, rent of church rooms,
transport & equipment.
By 1992 the growth of the individual groups meant a further split
was necessary:
North Northants Mind:
Kettering
East Northants
Corby
Wellingborough
Northampton & District Mind:
Northampton
Towcester
Daventry
In 1989 Kettering saw the launch of its appeal fund as the
members of Kettering Mind wanted to fundraise for their own building
(the daycentre was currently located in rented church rooms, and the
office was based at 15 London Road.)
In March 1994 the Russell Street building was purchased and after
extensive refurbishment the daycentre relocated to the new site,
followed in the autumn by the offices.
1998 saw the devolution of North Northants Mind and Kettering
Association for Mental Health was established still affiliated to
National Mind but now a Charity and Voluntary organisation in its
own right, managed by its own Executive Committee.
The Services have developed over the years and the Russell Street
Premises was launched as a Resource Centre in 2008 to promote mental
health recovery and wellbeing services. |
